“Venturnians overboard!”
At Venturn, we believe that true leadership in the maritime sector starts with understanding what happens at sea. Therefore, we organize a KRNM hazing three times a year for our new employees, so they can experience up close what it means to be responsible on the water. As a donator to the Royal Dutch Rescue Society (KRNM), we think it is important that our Venturnians not only learn about the maritime world but are in the middle of it.
Last week, the second group of Venturnians visited KNRM-station Hansweert. One of them is Sjors Kalfsterman, a Venturn Young Professional who is still impressed by this evening. We asked him about his experience.

A warm welcome in Hansweert
“We were given a warm welcome at KNRM rescue station Hansweert,” Sjors says. “There we met the rescue team, a solid group of more than 20 volunteers who immediately shared their stories with us. It struck me how much passion and dedication they have – really impressive.”
During the extensive presentation, the Venturnians learned how a rescue is prepared, what equipment is needed to do so and how KNRM operates under high pressure.
“You immediately realize how much experience and structure is behind every rescue,” Sjors said.
Jumping into the Westerschelde
After the presentation it was time for action: the KNRM had prepared a rescue training in which the Venturnians themselves were part of a rescue operation. “We were given waterproof suits and sailed onto the Westerschelde. There we jumped into the water – cold, but what an experience,” laughs Sjors.
The training was realistic and exciting: the lifeboat deliberately sailed away to then locate the Venturnians as ‘missing drowners’.
“After a few minutes, we saw the boat coming towards us at high speed. They stopped abruptly, hoisting us out of the water as if it were a real rescue operation. You sense from everything that this is serious work.”

Respect for the work of KNRM
“What impressed me most? The respect I have for these volunteers now,” says Sjors. “They are ready day and night, in all weathers, for people in need. And they do it completely voluntarily. You have to be incredibly strong-willed to do this work.”
Afterwards, the group returned to the rescue station, where a hot shower awaited them. The evening ended with informal drinks, during which there was plenty of talk about the impressive experience of earlier that evening.
Why this experience counts for Venturn
The KNRM Hazing perfectly aligns with the mission of our traineeship, which is to develop strong maritime leaders who know what is at stake. By giving these Young Professionals this hands-on experience, we create awareness, connection and respect for work at sea. And that forms an indispensable foundation for future leadership in the maritime industry.
