Vessel Manager • Rotterdam

Being a Vessel Manager is one thing, but being Vessel Manager of 8 ultra-powerful, versatile DP II long distance towing and anchor-handling vessels is another. ALP’s vessels are specifically designed to perform the most challenging ultra- long distance towing operations with continued heading control and offshore support services on arrival. As a Vessel Manager for ALP you are going to be responsible and accountable for the management of nominated vessels within their impressive fleet.

Responsibilities

Health, safety and environmental compliance are a top priority for you as a vessel manager. You will be planning, coordinating and managing dry-docking and major repairs including budgeting, reporting and analysing costs and also planning and coordinating scheduled and unscheduled maintenance floating maintenance / repairs. This whilst providing key learning and feedback following completion of dry-docking and major repairs of the assigned vessels. As a vessel manager you should define detailed scope of work to be carried out by third parties including expectations and deadlines whilst ensuring the cost effectiveness and performance management of these services. Also assist, if required, with warranty surveys and audit requirements (Internal & External). Coordinate and carry out internal and external Vessel inspections and visits to confirm condition and compliance with ALP Operating Standards.

Other responsibilities are ensuring all statutory and class certification remains valid and in compliance with relevant industry standards and developing accurate financial information and controls including providing OPEX budget and forecast input to the Fleet Manager. Important is to provide operational and technical support and guidance to assigned vessels, when required consult manufactures for specialist advice and guidance. As a Vessel Manager the management of people is also very important which is why Coaching and developing Chief Engineers in line with Competence Management and Performance Management objectives should be a priority. Another priority should be advising the appropriate manning appointments (qualifications and experience) on assigned vessels with Marine HR Resources. Also Communicating overall performance goals, expectations, and support achievement of personal goals for Chief Engineers and direct reports ashore. A Vessel Manager has to take part when required in interviews and make recommendations in respect to new-hires and promotes. People Performance is very important for ALP, which is why the Vessel Manager has to drive vessel staff to ensure People Performance through appropriate systems onboard and act upon disciplinary actions needed on board assigned vessels, in coordination with Marine HR. Not to forget the assisting/attending internal/external seminars and training and providing input and direction to Marine HR regarding identified sea staff training needs.

Other responsibilities are:

  • Ensure timely and cost-effective supply of stores and spares in cooperation with the purchasing department.
  • Review purchasing performance and ensure vessels maintain adequate stocks of critical spare parts.
  • Monitor vessel planned maintenance, ensure actions are taken to pro-actively manage onboard workload and compliance with rest hour regulations.
  • Analyse the nature and cause of any serious breakdown or damages together with internal / external parties if required.
  • Carry out regular Risk reviews for vessel operations and ensure appropriate actions are taken.
  • Form part of Emergency Response Team (ERT) as lead on technical issues and responsible for communication towards assigned vessel.
  • Support effective communications to assigned vessels informing them of corporate initiatives, customer requirements, policies, and priorities.

Qualification

Either experience as a ship engineer or experience in a ship management position and/or a university engineering degree.

  • Ability to respond positively to customers in an effective manner.
  • Demonstrates teamwork, interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of technical operations anchor handling and long-distance towing vessels is a pre.
  • Knowledge of different propulsion plants is a pre.
